Magical Miami.

The name Miami instantly conjures in the mind a place of magic and warmth and lights up the imagination with the impression of a beautiful beach holiday destination. Indeed Miami is home to one of the world's most alluring coastline and can justly boast to be a tourists' paradise and the association of a magical sense, is Miami also validated by its beautiful and endearing nickname, the Magic City. Situated in south eastern Florida in the United States, the city gets it's name from being the county seat of the state's most populated county, Miami Dade.

Miami's status as a truly global city is enhanced not only owing to it being an international trade and commerce and financial centre on one hand and media, arts, fashion and entertainment mecca on the other, but also due to it having a dozen sister states all across the world, of which Spain's Madrid, Peru's Lima, Argentina's Buenos Aires, Colombia's Bogota (all capital cities of their respective countries), Chile's Santiago and France's Nice are to name a few.

Miami's Geography.

Miami's geographical location goes a long way to give the place its unique charm, Miami is bordered by the Everglades National Park on the west and Biscayne National Park on the east and so the city and the suburbs are situated between the Florida Everglades (west) and the Biscayne Bay (east), extending from Florida Bay in the north to Lake Okeechobee.

Since a major portion of the city is in the Biscayne Bay, in it's early years the Miami area was popularly known as the 'Biscayne Bay County', moreover the city's beautiful terrain has so much variety to offer, like the Miami Rock Ridge as it's highest points and innumerable natural and artificially made barrier islands on the shores of Biscayne Bay, including the famous Miami Beach.

Miami's History.

The history of Miami makes a fascinating read and makes it much of an alluring place to explore, the area was under the sway of the Tequesta Indians for over a thousand years till their supremacy was taken by the Spanish conquistador, Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1566. Ever since then till today, owing to it's proximity to the Caribbean and a continuing highlight of cultural and linguistic practices has made Miami a Hispanic hub. Interestingly, modern Miami was founded by a wealthy and enterprising citrus grower of Cleveland origins, Julia Tuttle and till today remains the only major city in the United States to be founded by a woman.

The official status of a city was accorded to Miami in 1896 after the place grew into prominence when its harvest survived the Great Freeze of 1894-95, in spite of setbacks, like the Miami Hurricane of 1926 and the Great Depression of the 1930s, Miami has continued to flourish. It became a strategic naval base during World War II, and after 1959, when Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, Miami has been a safe haven for countless Cuban refugees who came over to mainland United States and making its population grow rapidly.

Miami's Economy.

The growth of Miami does not merely limit it's population which is over 4 million now from it's original 300 at the time of its inception in 1896, the economy has played a most crucial part and in just over 110 years the place has grown from strength to strength and aptly earned its nickname. Finance is the mainstay of Miami's economy and the city houses the corporate headquarters of several firms of international repute.

Miami, being so close to Latin America, also is the head of LatAm operations of more than 1400 multinational companies like AIG, FedEx, Disney, Sony, Microsoft, Oracle, Visa International to name a few, Moreover Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami rank among the busiest entry and exit points in the United States. Tourism in Miami is also very important, it attracts the footfall of over 12 million visitors from the Untied States and also from abroad visiting Miami's great Beaches, there's always something going on in Miami as there are plenty of festivals and events.

Places of Interest In Miami.

The Art Deco district in the South Beach is a perfect example of the richness and versatility of Miami, there are not only beautiful beaches but also a conglomeration of celebrated nightclubs and places of historical importance. Also, there is the Wynwood Art district that has some world famous names in modelling and fashion and every year the Miami Fashion Week and the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Miami are held to the delight and adulation of millions.

Downtown Miami is home of the city's most important and popular museums, Miami Art Museum, Lowe Art Museum, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens are to name a few and the Miami Cultural Centre houses the Main Miami Library. The city also has several gardens and parks, of which special mention must be made of Bayfront Park and Bicentennial Park, other places of interest include the Miami MetroZoo, Miami Seaquarium, Tropical Park etc.

Miami's Culture and Sports.

One of the reasons why Miami attracts so many tourists is because of it's rich cultural overtone that combines the old and the new and has something to offer for every visitor. Miami is renowned for its performing arts, Miami's fame is contributed by the prominent ballets, theatres, musicals and concerts performed by the Florida Grand Opera which was founded in 1941 and is the seventh oldest opera company in the United States. The city's Adrienne Arsht Centre for the Performing Arts stands second only to the New York Linclon Centre.

The city is one of the hottest and most happening place in the United States for it's music and dance which is a variety and mix of many cultures and traditions, for example there is the Cuban conga, rumba and the Caribbean calypso. Professional sports in Miami also have many takers, Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat and Florida Marlins, which are the football, basketball and baseball teams respectively, are the most popular, the Sony Ericsson Open for men's and women's tennis organized in Miami has also gained reputation lately.
