Miami has plenty of interesting museums worth visiting, like the Lowe Art Museum, Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Frost Art Museum and the Jewish Museum of Florida.

Bass Museum of Art.

The Bass Museum of Art, has delighted visitors since 1963 and along with the Lowe Art Museum and the Wolfsonian-FIU Museum, is considered one of Miami's finest museums on ancient art. Located at the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Centre, the museum's speciality is wide ranging from Reniassance to modern art, the museum building, which itself is an arresting piece of architecture reflecting art deco style, houses the extensive collection donated by art collectors, John and Johanna Bass.

The Bass Museum of Art is a favourite with vistors for both it's temporary exhibits and permanent, traditional ones, the museum's fascinating treasures include the 15th century 'The Coronation of the Virgin' by Botticelli', Ruben's 'The Holy Family', Rococo portraits along with a collection of 16th century Flemish tapestries. The gift shop of the museum offers visitors books on art, architecture and photography, besides decorative gift items and jewelry pieces by local and international craftsmen and folk art from all over the world.

Miami Art Museum.

For any connoisseur of contemporary art, whether from Downtown Miami or within the country or abroad, one great art museum that must not be missed is the Miami Art Museum. It is located at the same Miami Cultural Plaza as the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and there are plans to relocate it to the Bicentennial Park along with the Miami Science Museum.

The exhibition space of the museum is covered in three galleries in distinct series, the Upper Level houses only large-scale exhibitions, and it's magnitude is a first of it's kind in South Florida. The Plaza Level presents the permanent exhibits thematically and showcases Miami based artists from a global perspective, the New Work Gallery series displays new works by major contemporary artists.

The forte of the Miami Art Museum is looking at international art from the viewpoint of the United States, visitors of all ages and temperaments, visitors can also enjoy reading, writing and other activities.

Frost Art Museum.

The Art Museum at Florida International University started as a student gallery in 1977 and has grown in dimension and scope into one of Florida's major cultural institutions and voted as "Miami's Best Museum" in 1993, 1994 and 1996. The museum was accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1999 and renamed as the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum or in short, Frost Art Museum in 2004.

Frost Art Museum's speciality lies in it's unparalleled collection of Latin American and 20th century American artefacts and is a paradise for any art love, the museum contains the university's permanent art collection, temporary exhibits and lectures and as a recent major endeavour, it initiated an outdoor sculpture programme, where 57 exhibits by leading sculptors in contemporary art are showcased.

Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

One of Miami's major museums is the Historical Museum of Southern Florida that undertakes to tell the tales of bygone days in the regions of South Florida and the Caribbean, this large private museum was accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1979 and acts as the storehouse of all archaeological materials unearthed in the Miami Dade County. Located in Downtown Miami, the museum has a collection of over 12,000 objects and has something to attract visitors of varied preferences, it informs history in a novel manner and it's exhibition space covers two floors.

In the top floor is the 'Tropical Dreams' section that is a permanent gallery exhibiting 12,000 years of history, besides, there are two rotating galleries of temporary exhibitions, a Research Centre for scholars and museum professionals and a gift shop, the bottom floor houses museum offices and some collections and classrooms for educational programmes and lectures.

Jewish Museum of Florida.

The Jewish Museum of Florida, located at Miami Beach is housed in two historic buildings that were formerly synagogues, the main museum building was built in 1936 and finds mention in the National Register of Historic Places, the museum has a copper dome with 80 stained glass windows, the adjacent building, built in 1929, housed Miami Beach's first synagogue and was restored as a museum annexe before opening to the public in 2007.

The Jewish Museum of Florida highlights the rich historical significance of Jews to its visitors, whether Jew or non-Jew, a local resident or tourist, the museum's main appeal is it's tale of Jewish history, heritage and values since 1763 through it's mosiac and Jewish Life in Florida that contains over 500 photographs and artefacts, the museum is a centre of excellence and hosts its own travelling exhibitions and sponsors cultural programmes and communicates the Jewish experience through it's Collections and Research Centre.

Lowe Art Museum.

The history of the Lowe Art Museum, located in Coral Gables, it was 1950 when it started in three classrooms in the University of Miami, since then the museum has been maintained and updated by the university and has grown into a place that houses 5000 years of art history and it's rich collections cater to a multicultural audience from national and international shores, throughout the year there are numerous stimulating programmes, events and exhibitions, besides several temporary and travelling exhibitions.

The museum received accreditation from the American Association of Museums in 1972, being the first university art museum in the United States with that honour and in 1990 was designated as a major cultural institution of Florida. The Lowe Art Museum has over 16,000 exhibits on display, with it's speciality being it's permanent collection ranging Graeco-Roman antiquities, Renaissance, Baroque, modern art and also art of Ancient and Native Americans, of Asia, Latin America and Europe of the 17th and the 19th centuries.
